Crewel - White

Hand Block Fabrics

A classic Jacobean design inspired by the crewel embroidery work characteristic of the Stuart reign in England and Ireland during the seventeenth century. The era began in 1603 with King James I and ended with the death of Queen Anne in 1714. The traditional “tree of life” motif is composed of stylized botanical forms, including an imaginary vine – bearing thistle–like blossoms, berries, pomegranate and other exotic fruit. In order to create the effect of Jacobean crewel embroidery, “stitches” of bold colour are applied to a linen union ground cloth.

The design is hand blocked using a set of 56 blocks engraved in 1923 and 14 block colours.
