This dramatic ‘garden of paradise’ motif of exquisitely detailed foliage and brilliantly plumed birds on a natural linen ground cloth has an elegant extravagance that is characteristic of high Victorian style. It is names after the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, the opulent seaside home to George, Price Regent and later King George IV, his brother William IV and their niece Queen Victoria. The exterior of the Brighton Pavilion, a combination of classicism and Indian style, is largely the work of architect John Nash. Decoratedin the Chinese taste, the interior is a fantasy world filled with mythical creatures, astonishing colors and superb craftsmanship. Our Brighton design is not unlike the hand painted wallpaper in the Red DrawingRoom of the Brighton Pavilion and in the bedroom of Queen Victoria’s apartment, both designed in 1836 byRobert Jones. It is hand blocked using a set of 168 blocks engraved in 1917 and 19 block colors (plus blotch).
